It's fascinating with the different connotations words have in cultures. Myself, I think I'd qualify as liberal in both USA and France, and in Sweden as well.
The article is excellent. Articulating very well exactly what I've been thinking when living in France.
I think that in the 80s, when neoliberalism struck the west, we had similar ideas in Sweden as in France. But during the 90s Sweden went through necessary(?) liberalising reforms and gradually the word liberal got a more positive meaning, and the "neo" disappeared from discourse.
But today, when the right has become left in Sweden, I think we lack a strong convinced liberal (non-ultra) voice in Sweden.
However, this lack is a lot more pronounced in France. Actually, there's a desperate need for it. Paraphrasing a Swedish politician, it's actually France that is the last Sovjet state.
